We met Greg Ashley when playing at a burnt out bar in Oakland, in his band the Gris Gris. Somehow after the incredible show, either The Cuts’ Garret Goddard or Chris Owen snuck a copy of Ashley’s first solo record to Birdman honcho David Katznelson and that told the whole story: Ashley is a singer songwriter deeply seeped in the tradition of psychedelic music, baked in with a healthy dose of experimental bruhaha.  His lyrics carry the realness of a poetic street poet ala Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen. He is an American original.
